Asisto vs a traditional answering service

An off-site call centre whose operators answer your phone and pass on messages.

The short answer

An answering service takes a message; an AI receptionist finishes the job. The difference that matters is whether the caller hangs up with an appointment or with a promise that someone will call them back.

The honest read

Answering services solved a real problem and still do: a human voice picks up when you cannot, and for calls that need a person - a distressed patient, a genuine emergency - that matters. The limits are structural. An operator handling a dozen accounts cannot know your business, cannot see your calendar, and is usually billed by the minute, which prices the conversation rather than the outcome. Most calls end in a message you still have to action. Asisto finishes the call: it answers the question, books the slot, and writes it to your calendar.

Where a traditional answering service wins

  • A human voice, which some callers and some industries genuinely require.
  • Judgement on a call that has gone somewhere unexpected.
  • Long-established compliance practices in medical and legal answering.
  • No configuration - you hand over a script and they run it.

Where Asisto wins

  • Books the appointment instead of taking a message about wanting one.
  • Answers instantly, with no hold queue when the centre is busy.
  • Knows your business in depth, because it is configured for one.
  • Handles every call at once during a rush rather than queueing them.
  • Talk time does not change the bill, so long calls are not expensive calls.

How each one charges

Rates change, so no figures are quoted here. What matters when you compare is the shape of the bill, and that is below.

Asisto

Unlimited minutes. Pay only for appointments the AI books, or a flat monthly rate - either way, talk time does not move the bill.

A traditional answering service

Typically billed per minute or per call, often with a monthly minimum, so cost rises with talk time. Some services bill for the time spent taking a message you then act on yourself.

Questions people ask

What is the real difference?
Where the call ends. An answering service typically ends it with a message someone at your business has to action. Asisto ends it with a booked appointment written to your calendar, so nothing is left owing.
Do answering services book appointments?
Some will, if you give them calendar access, though an operator covering several accounts is working without the context to judge a scheduling conflict. Asisto sees the live calendar and books against it directly.
Is per-minute billing a problem?
It charges you the same for a booked appointment as for a wrong number, a supplier and a robocall - and the caller who rambles costs more than the one who does not. Unlimited minutes removes that entirely; a per-appointment plan goes further and ties cost to the outcome.
When is an answering service still the right answer?
When calls genuinely need a human - crisis lines, some medical triage, situations where a person must exercise judgement and take responsibility for it. That is a real category and software should not be sold into it.
